After a restless night, we were up and getting ready at 5:15. Our final bill was in the mailbox outside our room. It wasn't as bad as I had feared. Room service came at 6:30. We actually arrived at Fort Lauderdale ahead of schedule so we had to hurry through breakfast and race around to get ready for disembarkation around 7:15. So much for a peaceful breakfast on the verandah that I had planned. Maybe we can rest on the plane, yeah right.
We sped through the disembarking area. The customs girl didn't even look at us, just took the paperwork, put it in a pile and waved us through. Now Mike wishes he had brought back some forbidden Cuban cigars. We hauled our heavy check-in bags to a shuttle bus and then through the airport terminal, with sweat pouring down each of our faces by the time we got to the Delta check in. Of course it probably didn't help that we had our Seattle jackets on in 70 degree weather in Fort Lauderdale.
After dumping off the bags, we made it through security early and then found good seats in the minimalistic Delta waiting area.
Our flight was soon announced to be 1/2 hour late because the originating flight from Cincinnati was late because of deicing in a snow storm there. People started swarming the Delta clerks because they were going to be missing flight connections. The Delta crew kept their cool but there wasn't much they could do except re-schedule some flights. By the time we left Fort Lauderdale, the flight was nearly an hour late but that became to our advantage because the flight to JFK in New York wasn't full so we had 3 seats between the 2 of us.
Our flight in New York wasn't going to be delayed so we didn't have a lot of time to get to our plane there. Where we got off the plane in the Delta terminal, all we could find to eat was a Burger King so we grabbed some yucky burger there and headed toward our flight, only to find at least a dozen better places that we could have eaten at along the way. Figures. Mike checked us in to try to get seats closer to the front while I headed off for a few minutes thinking that we still had some time left. Mike was informed that the plane was already boarding and I was nowhere in sight. Mike got frantic and took off looking for me. He went nearly all the way back to the original Burger King place before giving up and turning around only to find me at our flight gate waiting for him. Then it turned out that even though the plane was boarding, it wasn't full and we had plenty of time to get on.
Uneventful flight and 5 1/2 hours later we were in Seattle. Ugh. Not that Seattle is an Ugh, we just had to face reality and realize that our Caribbean cruise was over. All in all the cruise was great, the weather was great and the people and food were great. We may do it all over again some day.
