Day 8, October 3, Brooklyn

Started the day by a 1 mile walk to Joyce Coffee, a very cool little neighborhood coffee shop. Great coffee and pastries, like almond brioche and muffins. Then we walked to the subway and went in to Manhattan. The subways are still kind of strange. Nobody looks at or talks to anyone on the subway. Like Nick says though, "Nobody wants to be there".

Our outing on this day (Saturday) started by going to the Chelsea Market, where they have reconditioned an old warehouse into an upscale Pike Place Market type place. We had a great lunch at an organic place called Green Table. Everything was so fresh and so tasty.

Then by the time we left there we discovered that it was raining outside. Corre was the only one that had brought an umbrella so Nick and I bought 2 for $9 umbrellas from a street vendor that magically appeared when the rain started. From there we walked to a cool new park that the city had created where an elevated train used to run. The park itself is very modern and takes up about half a mile of space above the city streets. Nice place to chill out when the weather is nice.

We went to a store called Fishs Eddy that is a big store in a small space that has everything from silverware to pottery from Brooklyn.

From there we walked in the rain to Babies R Us to get a gift for Corre's sister's baby. Next door to that was a Starbucks so of course we had to go there. They are just now getting the Via coffee packs in the Starbucks stores in the Northeast so they are offering a Taste Challenge and if you can tell the difference between the Via coffee and the drip coffee, they'll give you a free cup of coffee. Corre jumped on that and won a free cup. Sharon actually didn't win her free cup because the Via they were testing was the Italian blend and she wasn't familiar with it. Not to fear though, every Starbucks is offering the Taste Challenge so she got her free cup later.

We then hopped on the subway again and went back to Brooklyn to go to Corre's sister's place (Cara and Ian) to see their new baby boy named Rhen. Of course they live on the top floor of a brownstone like Nick and Corre so it took more trudging up flights of stairs to get to their place. We were only there to visit for awhile and have a drink with them and Corre's Aunt and Uncle who showed up with their 2 girls. Fun evening. Rhen is a real sweetie. He's now about 1 week old.

From there we walked (you walk a LOT in New York if you don't own a car and the subway isn't near) back to Nick and Corre's place. Nick and I went and got pizza and wine while Sharon and Corre went back to the apt.

The weather has been very warm and other than the rain today, which ended by the end of the day, it has had a real tropical feel since we've been here, highs in the upper 60's and high humidity at times.

On to tomorrow.
